overlapping circles (Rechercheprojekt)
I am interested in how seemingly unconnected things meet and are interconnected. We all live in different, parallel realities that are not always visible to others. In every life, different worlds are uniquely interconnected. Individual elements enter into dialogue with each other. Nothing exists without other(s). New stories emerge from the encounter, which are transformed again in the retelling and translation into other media. What is reality is continuously redefined.
My research explores these questions on the basis of KST, a Swiss living in London as an interpreter for many years. She is now being cared for in a nursing home since suffering a severe stroke. Entrusted with clearing her house has given me insights into the multi-faceted life of a single woman, where global and private stories meet, seemingly disparate worlds intersect. In the process, I have come across so much interesting, eclectic material that I want to explore how this might be developed further. I am recording and reconnecting the many circles overlapping in her life.
Her work as an interpreter at government conferences is part of this, her love of clematis, which was brought to Europe by a missionary, as is a doctoral thesis on the Basel Mission in India, her work in the women‘s centre, candle making, and long-standing friendships with other professional women.
How can this be told? With what artistic media and means? How can divergent, disparate things be brought together to form a narrative of their own?
